DISCLAIMER: This is not particularly geared towards anyone in particular, as I have also been in a situation of concern recently related to this, but I feel like this needs to be brought up.
Recently there have been a ton of concerning situations involving anything from accusations to misunderstandings, etc. In prison, there have been - and will always be drama and “beef” amongst players; that’s just how people operate - not everyone’s going to get along. What I am particularly worried about is how far some of these conversations and accusations go, and what that does to players’ names particularly involving defamation of names, especially in regards to Staff apps, so let’s talk about it!
To best illustrate what I’m getting at, I’ll speak about what I mentioned in the disclaimer above; A situation arose out of a misunderstanding of wording to the point where staff needed to get involved. With this misunderstanding, there were accusations of almost complete absurdity, and the staff member that was working with us (me and the player of the accusations) is someone I frequently talk to and consider a friend. Fortunately, this situation was moderated, and was resolved. All is good, yes? Well, not quite. Even though the situation was isolated from public eye, now the problem of perception arises where the staff member looks differently at me, as well as even higher up staff members, which hurts relationships with them, as well as makes my image look bad.
Despite how rough of a situation this could have been, it was still best case scenario compared to what I’ve been seeing recently with other players - There was an issue today with a player’s name getting absolutely slaughtered in the prison chat over a misunderstanding. This situation had a player of a unique ethnicity that wasn’t aware of a slur, and after being told about the context, had gone to the player and apologized accordingly. The other player definitely had their fair share of complaints and frustration at the other player (justifiably so), but it went to the point where he was questioned by staff and threatened for punishment after being shown clips, which made the player (with the unique background) look really bad, when I personally believe they had no bad intentions of anything, but I digress…
This was mainly meant as a rant, but I would like to see some sort of action taken to keep situations like this silent to avoid false defamation of someone’s name. My case was dealt with very professionally by an incredible staff member, and I’d like to understand if there could be any more steps taken to avoid situations like this?
On a somewhat similar note, I’ve seen a lot of statements on prison that are filthy to even think about another person. such as (and not limited to): Self harm statements, slurs, personal attacks, etc. And some of this happens in the main prison chat where ~ everyone can see these messages. This is starting to get out of control, but I also understand there is a shortage of staff, hence the staff application openings, and I would like to note that the staff are doing a phenomenal job for what they’ve been given.
My concerns about this that I’m curious about:
- Is there a specific procedure that goes through filtering these kinds of situations?
- What can players do to avoid seeing these kinds of statements?
- Is there any logical way to work towards a system that helps prevent both of these situations from happening?
No accusations towards anyone, just hoping I can get some clarification as well as raising awareness of these situations.
Thank all of you Munchies for your time!
