Mojang's Caves and Cliffs announcement + Munchy's Survival Reset

Recently, Mojang has released information on the Caves and Cliffs update. They have confirmed that they will be separating the 1.17 update in to 2 parts. To cut it short, with the Survival reset on the horizon, the build limit will be increased in the Winter update exclusively. The reset however is in the summer, in which the first part is being updated without features such of the build limit increase. Will Munchy update the server with exclusively the 256 height limit, or will they use the data pack published by Mojang? Issues with this concern me in the fact that not everything has been added in the summer update, rather than the winter, and will cause issues with certain structures not being able to be found in the Main World, such as the Warden in the Deep Dark.

1.17 is expected to release mid July of 2021, and Survival is resetting in May. I wish that Survival would have waited to reset in July, that way we could get the 1.17 features on a fresh world.

The issue with resetting in July for Munchy would be losing the features of the 1.17 winter update with has more content (presumably) than the 1.17 summer update, which may result in rarity in certain items.

True, but waiting to reset in Winter is off the table imo

Your not wrong, because even if Munchy pushed the reset to Winter it would throw the community into shambles seeing as despite the ease of doing exactly that, possibly a lot of people would be angered in that decision.

We definitely have some decisions to make about how we’re going to approach this next map with Mojang having split the 1.17 release into two parts, but rest assured we’ll put a lot of thought into how best to do that for our server.

This kind of thing is actually exactly why we didn’t want to make the Munchy survival reset coincide with the 1.17 release. It takes a LOT of time, effort, planning and many many different people to organise a new season, and Mojang doesn’t release definitive dates and info until quite late.
They also don’t really design their updates with larger multiplayer servers in mind so we can sometimes need to rely on third parties to also update and release things in order for us to be able to run the server on the newest version.
I don’t know how many of you were around for the last reset, which we coincided with the 1.14 release, but the first few months of the map were plagued with major performance issues and we had to reduce the player cap all the way down to 40 for the server to run.
Trying to develop new content for a version that doesn’t exist yet is also…challenging. Especially the amount of new content that we want to release with this new map.

The other thing to factor in is the age of the current map. If a map is up for too long, the vast majority of regular players lose motivation to play, the economy gets squiffy and new players are overwhelmed by the gap between them and people who have been playing for over a year. A new map keeps everything fresh and progressing, and leaving it too long between resets does more harm than good. We definitely couldn’t wait until Winter, and July would already be too much of a push.
The timing isn’t ideal, nor is the delaying of the new terrain, but it’s not insurmountable and I’m absolutely certain we can have a great map regardless.

We tend to deal with significant terrain changes by doing large border expansions, which is how we’ll approach this one too. Never fear, you’ll get all the new content when it becomes viable for us to add it!
